Headstones and Memorials

Headstones and Memorials

When you go into a churchyard or cemetery anywhere in the UK today, more often than not you are faced with rows of shiny, mass produced black granite gravestones. Wander further in, to where the older headstones are found, and you will see headstones made of mellow British limestone, sandstone and slate. Monumental masons in the past used stone from their immediate locality, carving inscriptions by hand, and the resulting memorials sit naturally in their environment, complementing their surroundings. In my workshop I make use of many of the most beautiful natural British stones, most commonly Welsh and Cumbrian slate, Forest of Dean sandstone, Portland limestone and Purbeck marble.

Many customers who come to me for headstones and other memorials tell me they knew they didn’t want a standard granite gravestone for their loved one, but they didn’t know how to go about finding something more in keeping with their tastes, or indeed if any alternative was available. I am always happy in that situation to be able to tell them, “You are in the right place now.”

Commissioning a headstone can be a daunting prospect. Emotions are often raw and frequently it is the first time that clients have commissioned anything. I am extremely sympathetic to how people may be feeling, and the effort it can take to pick up the phone and start the process moving. There is a certain amount of decision-making and paperwork involved, and I consider it a key part of my role to give helpful advice, always taking your views and preferences into account. I undertake all the paperwork required by Church bodies and Local Authorities on the client’s behalf.

The following pages give full details on how to commission a headstone. There are also pages giving details of the stones that I work with, and lots of examples of headstones I have made.

I supply memorials all over the UK. If you have any questions please do get in touch with me.

“Your help in every aspect has been invaluable and has made the process so much easier and more comfortable. In short, you feel like family and we bless the day we found you!”
